Lumia 540 – The standard standard [Executive Review]

After the acquisition of Nokia, Microsoft has become really aggressive and persistent. Though the Windows OS has been slow to evolve, Microsoft has been really quick in coming out with new devices. Following the Lumia 640 and 535, the Lumia 540 is a device that is placed between these two offering. In an incremental price difference of Rs 1000, you will now find at-least one Lumia device, starting from Rs 5000 (Lumia 430). As I mentioned in my earlier post, the Lumia 540 is not a major, but an incremental upgrade to the Lumia 535.

Here are the key specifications that and differences between the Lumia 540, Lumia 535 and Lumia 640

Lumia 540 launched in India for Rs 10199

Microsoft is hell bent on bending the budget segment to make it work for them. They have launched yet another device in the budget segment and its the Lumia 540. The Lumia 540 is not a massive upgrade from 535 which was a good success for Microsoft. The Lumia 540 offers better camera and upgradability to Windows 10. Though it has the similar display size as the Lumia 535, the mobile is slightly bigger in all dimension, possibly to accommodate a bigger camera sensor. Also the display is now upgraded to HD and has ClearBlack display polarization for better sunlight visibility. Lumia 540 has a 8 MP rear facing camera capable of 480p videos. Here are the specs of the Lumia 540 compared to its predecessor Lumia 535.

As you can see from the table above, the Lumia 540 is a minor upgrade. A better display and camera will cost you Rs 3000 more. Priced at Rs 10,199, the Lumia 540 is clearly another budget device from Microsoft. Apart from the regular bundle of Microsoft suite of products, Indian consumers get a few offers along with the purchase.  On every purchase of the new Lumia 540, Airtel will offer consumers double the data free for a period of 2 months. For the consumers on the Lumia 540, Paytm, will offer a cashback worth INR 1000 on recharges made via the Paytm app (Rs. 200 off every month for 5 months). Ola offers Lumia 540 buyers cashback of INR 800 on Ola money recharges (for Rs.200 cashback per recharge for the first four recharges of Rs.500 or higher). The Lumia 540 Dual SIM users will also get a 2 months free subscription on Gaana.com including unlimited music downloads.

Lumia 540

Redmi Note and Lenovo A7000 are two Android phones that comes to my mind instantly in this price band. Clearly any other Android mobile in this segment would have better specs than the Lumia 540. But its not all about the specs. If you are a fan of the fast and snappy Windows Phone UI, you will love any Lumia and the Lumia 540 is no exception. Please standby and stay tuned for a detailed review on the Lumia 540 dual sim.

My thoughts on the Lumia 532

For some strange reasons, Microsoft Lumia is concentrating on the low end and mid range mobiles rather than the high end mobiles. They justify this stance with some marketing statistics and some financial gyaan. I am not here to say that what they are doing is wrong, but I really want to see the high end devices from Lumia more than these low hanging fruits. If there is any operating system that can give you the same user experience in a high end device and a low end device, then that would be the Windows Phone OS. The moment Microsoft realized this fact, they started making budget devices. The Lumia 520 paved way for this strategy and now Microsoft will soon run out of numbers to name their mobile models in this segment. We had the Lumia 525, 530 and then the 535 and now we have the Lumia 532.

The Lumia 532 is here to prove a point that has been proved over and over that Windows phone can run smoothly on minimal hardware. It is powered by  Qualcomm MSM8212 Snapdragon 200 Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 processor and has a 1 GB RAM. It has an internal storage of 8 GB and memory can be expanded by SD card. It has a four inch display and thick at almost 12mm. It is powered by a 1560 mAh battery. When it comes to robust construction, there is no word left to describe Lumia’s excellence in that department. But design aesthetics is something Lumia could have concentrated with the Lumia 532. It is a very thick device and not that pleasing in the eyes, when compared to all the options available in the market at this price range. But on the plus side, the device is comfortable to hold and handle because of its weight and thickness.

The display is mediocre, but for this price range of Rs 6300, it does its job for sure. It has average readability in direct sunlight and the viewing angles are also pretty decent. The battery lasts for little over a day and the gaming performance is just about good when you play graphic intensive games. It does not have 4G LTE connectivity.

The camera performance is poor. Lumia is generally known for great camera. But the Lumia 532 has a primitive 5Mp camera with no flash. The camera is fixed focus and the front camera is just a VGA. You can see from the samples below that the focusing is a bit unpredictable and difficult to master. The colors are close to natural but it is a bit washed out. The images are not sharp and tends to have grainy images even under full sunlight.

Lumia 532 is not a disappointment in total, but it could have been priced lower. It was launched for Rs 6500 and now you can get it for less that Rs 6200. If you a are ready to pay a bit more, there are lot of options available in the market that offers better features and performance. The likes of Lenovo, Xiaomi and Motorola are already making a killing in this segment. If only this device has been priced at Rs 5000 or less, all its flaws would have been forgiven.

Check out the knockout challenge video below. I compare the Lumia 532 with a budget android device. The challenge is pretty close, but at the end I give it to the Lumia 532 just because it is able to achieve so much of performance with so little of hardware.
