If you need to check if the Mi4i is the right mobile for you, you can check our review here and also you can check the detailed review on the camera here. It has got an excellent camera like most other Xiaomi devices. Buyers who are looking to buy a sub 10k mobile may not extend and get the Mi4i, but if you are specifically looking to buy the Mi4i, you will be more than happy on this price cut. There is no price cut on the 32 GB variant as of now. Xiaomi has done price cuts in the past with Mi4 and Redmi Note, but more than the price cuts we would be happy if Xiaomi bring in the rest of the cavalry into India.

Xiaomi has also recently introduced “Mi Protect” insurance plans for its devices in India. The Mi Protect service will be available for those Xiaomi phones and tablets only which are purchased from Mi.com/in. The Mi Protect plans will be covering accidental and liquid damage caused to the device. The Mi Protect plan will come with other features like 24×7 call centre support for the subscribers to report damages, free pick-up and drop-off services, 1GB of  cloud storage feature, SIM misuse insurance cover of up to Rs 3,000, one call to block SIM from anywhere in the
world. The buyers will also be getting the second servicing for free within one year of activation.

The insurance plans are starting from Rs. 275 for Redmi 2 and  Redmi 2 Prime , while its Rs. 499 for devices like Xiaomi Mi 4i , Mi Pad and the Mi 4 16GB . The Full pricing plans and terms and conditions can be checked from company’s official website. So with an additional Rs 499, the Mi4i deal just got sweeter!

MIUI gets Mi Drop feature for faster file transfers

The latest build of the MIUI 7 got a new feature called the Mi Drop. If you have been using apps like Share it, you would understand the need for such a feature. Just in case, you are not aware, the app creates a one to one wifi hotspot between devices and transferring large files between these two devices takes place almost instantly. Bluetooth transfers can be very slow and USB transfers are cumbersome. The Mi Drop is an inbuilt feature like many other features in the MIUI ROM. So if you have two mobiles with Mi-Drop enabled, you can transfer huge files instantly.

The downside of this feature is that, it works only between two devices that has the latest version of MIUI. To send files, just select the file(s) and choose MiDrop option from the sending methods. The receiving device must enable Mi Drop from the notification tray. The sender will see the reciving device on their mobile and selecting the device will instantly transfer the file.

Roadblocks ahead for Xiaomi in bringing the Redmi Note 2 to India

Last week Xiaomi announced two new mobiles in their line up. The Redmi Note 2 and the Redmi Note 2 prime. The Redmi Note 2 is a major upgrade to the Redmi Note. It is powered by a 2 GHz MediaTek Helio X10 octa core processor. It has 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of ROM. Its display is 5.5 inch and supports Full HD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The Redmi Note 2 is a beefed up version of the Redmi Note 2. It has the same MediaTek Helio X10 processor, but clocked at 2.2 GHz and also it has 32 GB of storage. Both the devices has 13 MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and 5-element lens. The front facing camera is 5 Mp. They are powered by 3060 mAh battery with dual SIM 4G LTE option. However the highlight of these devices is that, they run on Android llipop-based MIUI 7 out-of-the-box. Redmi Note 2 is slim and lighter than its predecessor, the Redmi Note. In china these devices are priced at RMB 799 (Rs 8,080 approximately) and RMB 899 (Rs 9,103 approximately).

Roadblocks ahead for Xiaomi in bringing the Redmi Note 2 to India

The big question looming in my head right now is, if these devices will ever make it to India. The reason is that, Xiaomi was taken to court by Ericsson for infringing 8 of its intellectual property copyrights. Following the lawsuit, Xiaomi was banned from selling MediaTek powered devices in India. The ban still holds good. Xiaomi does not sell any MediaTek powered devices in India. The Redmi Note 3G, powered by MediaTek processor,  was on sale for about a couple of weeks and it was replaced by the Redmi Note 4G, which is powered by a snapdragon processor.

The biggest strength of the Redmi Note 2 could become its biggest roadblock in India. The MediaTek Helio X10 is a flagship processor from MediaTek and it powers devices like HTC M9+, Gionee Elie E8 and Meizu MX5. These devices have been receiving rave reviews for their performances and the same is expected out of Redmi Note 2 as well. But in India, Xiaomi may bring a Snapdragon variant of the Redmi Note 2, if it decides to bring it in. Xiaomi may opt to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset compromising on price and performance.

Alternatively Xiaomi may decide to skip the Redmi Note 2, totally and get on it its other plans for India. This is more likely, because Indian market is highly price conscious and Xiaomi knows it more than anyone.

Redmi 2 vs Redmi 2 Prime vs Lenovo A6000 plus

So, its big news from Xiaomi. Xiaomi has officially started assembling mobiles in India. Taiwanese Foxconn’s factory at Sri City in Vishakapatnam will be the factory where Xiaomi kicks off its operations. Xiaomi is known for selling quality mobiles at low cost and this move will help Xiaomi meet faster shipping times and better handling of logistics. So coming back to our main story, the Redmi 2 prime will be the first mobile to be rolled out of the assembly lines in India. A few weeks back, Xiaomi launched the mobile in Brazil where it will be manufactured by Foxconn, Brazil. So it is pretty much the same mobile. Infact it is pretty much the same as Redmi 2, but with a beefed up battery and RAM.

Similar to the relationship between Lenovo A6000 and Lenovo A6000 plus, the Redmi 2 Prime has double the RAM and ROM when compared to the Redmi 2. As you can see from the spec sheet comparison below, every other detail of the Redmi 2 Prime is exactly same as Redmi 2. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with Adreno 306 GPU. It has a 720p HD display with 4.7 inch screen protected by corning gorilla glass 2. It runs on Android 4.4.4 with MIUI 6.0 on top and it is powered by 2200 mAh lithium polymer battery.

In my earlier review of the Redmi 2, I had mentioned that A6000 was its closest competitor and now with the Redmi 2 prime in the scene, Lenovo A6000 plus is its competitor. I have been recommending the Lenovo A6000 plus over Redmi 2 for the very reason that it has double RAM and ROM and now that Redmi 2 prime is here, I would strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a budget device with decent performance. Also the Lenovo A6000 plus is priced at Rs 7500 while the Redmi 2 is priced at Rs 7000.

I haven’t reviewed the Redmi 2 prime yet and my recommendation here is coming out of my love for MIUI ROM. It offers great user experience and useful set of features out of the box. It is also easy to understand and easy to use across various age groups.

Redmi Note 4G gets a price drop. Now available at Rs 7999

CIuMlW_UYAAoWZc

The popular Redmi Note 4G’s price is slashed by Rs 2000. It was priced at Rs 9999 and it is now available for Rs 7999. Xiaomi has been constantly revising price for their mobiles in the market. But the price has been comparatively stable for quite some time. Earlier this month we were pleasantly surprised by the price reductions in Mi4. This price reduction on Redmi Note 4G, could be due to the imminent launch for its successor. Xiaomi is touted to launch the Redmi Note 2 today in China. Though it could take a while for it to be available in India, it may not be in the price range of Redmi Note 4G. So to make way for the Redmi Note 2, the Redmi Note 4G’s price has been revised.

At Rs 7999, the Redmi Note 4G is a great buy. Just to recap on its specifications

  • 5.5-inch IPS display 720 x 1280 pixels

  • Android 4.4.2 OS with MIUI 5

  • Qualcomm MSM8928 Snapdragon 400

  • Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A7

  • Adreno 305

  • 2GB RAM

  • 8GB internal memory expandable up to 64 GB

  • 13 MP rear camera

  • 5 MP front camera

  • 3200 mAh battery

Check out my review of the Redmi Note 4G at Gadgetdetail. Even at the price of Rs 9999, it was a great device and now that it has been reduced by Rs 2000, the offer just got sweeter.

It is available in Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal and Mi.com. Flipkart offers exchange offers of upto Rs 3000.
