How the web 2.0 catapulted Obama into the Whitehouse

Information is no more a personal property. Anyone can obtain any information and contribute to the information database. Barack Obama’s online campaign was leveraged at large by the information decentralization. The 2nd version of the web is not only about information but its also about contribution of information. Senator Obama’s Web Gurus knew that he has to shed his image as someone of high rank in unreachable position. The wanted to get rid of one-way-traffic stereo typed election campaigns. Their aim was to make Obama’s image an User-Friendly Next-Gen President of the USA.

Starting from providing information about himself and his campaign at Barackobama.com, Obama’s campaign utilized every possible corners of the webspace. Barack Hussain Obama, converted himself into a brand. A brand that every American would love to endorse. He made a logo for himself. Its not a political symbol or some sort of election seal. Its the brand logo of Obama himself. This was his online identity which turned out to be a huge success and entered every home via the Internet. His followers could either use it as it is or customize it and use it as Avatars, Feed logos, favicons, Online Community Identity or even email signatures.

Facebook on its own is a great media to propagate Obama and his campaign ideologies. Mock elections, opinion polls, Campaign discussions and much were were added as facebook applications. All of them were a huge success. 24 years old Facebook Co-Founder Chris Hughes pitched in his expertise to build Obama’s own facebook, called myBarackObama.com. Volunteers used this site organize over 150,000 campaign-related events over the entire course of the campaign. Obama’s FightTheSmears.com was a major combat weapon to fight any rumours on Obama or his party. The website’s tag-line is “Powered by Truth”. Arun Chaudary, Obama’s youtube henchman were key to his online success as well. All his campaigns, initiatives and services were customized, edited and posted on Obama’s youtube channel almost instantly. Chaudary quotes that this sort of technology was available many years ago, but it was utilized only now. He also add to the statistics that online viewers are not just kids and teenagers, but it has a mammoth amount of people aged between 40-45 as well.

Obama campaigners reached each other via the iPhones as well. iPhone App Store stocked the free application called Obama ’08. Instant access to campaign information, photos, videos, poll results and much more was shared via this application. Other mobile users across the globe were also not left behind. Obama reached out to the twittizens as well. @BarackObama is the one to be followed on twitter to recieve twiupdates. Obama could barely ask for more of his online presence. He was omni-web-present: mySpace, Faceboook, youtube, flickr, Eventful, Flickr, LinkedIn, Eons, Faithbase, Glee and on much more web 2.0 engines.

Obama’s online initiatives have helped touched the hearts and minds of the nation on a very large and cost-effective scale. This victory would be scrutinized, studied, preserved and passed on as a success story of the Internet as the penultimate marketing tool. A classic example of empowering people and technology and a path that shows the route to success for business and marketers to come.

If Abhimanyu was to Dronacharya, then KRK must be to TR. The ultimate bear star of South India Vijaya T Rajendar. His nemesis was Veera Thalapathy – JKR (JK Riteesh), who recently entertained the hell out of us in the recent blot-buster Nayagan. Gabtun VJ kanth has been a childhood friend of KRK and the Telegu Movie makers are killing themselves for having refused KRK to play along side with Natasimham Nandamuri Balakrishna one year ago. Mithundada, have you got anything to add to this? guess not…

The Present:

It is touted that Daniel Craig personally contacted KRK and pleaded him to change release dates of Desh Drohi from Nov 7th to Nov 14. 007 knew that it would drastically weaken the collections at the box office and guess what… KRK agreed. The world premier of Desh Drohi is scheduled on Nov 14 which happens to be children’s day. Inspite of Gautam Menon and Surya’s repeated phonecalls, KRK refused to change dates once again. So, this movie is on head to head race with Vaaranam Aayiram. God Save Gautam and Surya.

The Future:

The movie will be a sooper dooper hit across the Globe. A new disease called Laugh-to-Death’o-Mania is bound to spread among young movie watchers. OH Media, the media parter will increase their market share in Media and merge with Koovam Media and rename themselves as AIYO Media. Gracy Singh has promised to change her name to DisGracy Singh, if this movie become a flop – such confidence. Rozza Catalano has vowed to take back Saif from Bebo as her popularity is expected to grow manifolds after the release of Desh Drohi. Kim Sharma is poised to forget her chances with the big banners and even her nano-costume can’t rescue her career anymore. Did i say Big Banners? sorry, the Big Banners will cease to exist and will be replaced by the supereme Banner KRK. Whatta Man! Balaji Tele Films and Sony BMG are expected to make a movie out of the character ShaktiMaan donned by KRK. Name suggestions are welcome. My contirbution – JattiMaan: lage iski jatti mein daag.

The Transsiberian is a movie about a journey. Roy and Jessie travel in the Transsiberian express to reach Moscow from Beijing. Jessie had a troubled background and Roy bails her out of it and they are so much in love. They are married, but Jessie is not yet ready to start a family. Roy is a locomotive fanatic and he is a simple man from a simple background. As they cross into the borders of Russia, they meet up with Aby and Carlos. Carlos senses the trouble in their marital life and makes is moves to woo Jessie. Roy misses the train in a station and the adventure starts. The rest of the movie is a downhill ride filled with drug trafficking, love, lust, faith, Russian Mafia, corrupt police officers, deception and twists. This movie is one hell of a ride that keeps the audience to the edge of their seats. Though the only big wig is Ben Kingsley, the entire cast and crew have done their best to make this thriller.

Golmaal Returns

We must have come across movie reviews which advice the viewers to shut their brain and enjoy the movie. But I guess Rohit Shetty has watched many such movies and decided to shut his brain and make a movie… and the result: Golmaal Returns. The movie is about… well the movie is not about anything, its just a collection of slapstick comedies and on-liners to give the viewers a rib tickling 3 hours of humor club experience. To spice up the masala, the hot ingredients are Kareena, Amrita, Celina and the fresh Anjana Sukhani and ofcourse the main course Ajay Devgan along with sidekicks like Arshad warshi, Tusshar and Shreyas Talpade. The hotties have done their job and Ajay Devgan fills the stomach along with Arshad and Shreyas, but sidekick (allakai) Tusshar drastically needs to shed is useless-crank-boy kinda role. Else he will be a sidekick for ever. There are lot of hilarious instances in the movie, where they mock at OSO, Saawariah, Tashan and some recent flicks. Watchout for the cute tamil dialogue pronounciation by Celina and Shreyas. The one line story: Ajay’s adventures to manage is doubting wife Kareena and at the same time deal with his foe Arshad, aided by the sidekicks and rest of the hotties. Well, its a good laugh and the movie will stay on screens for a while and box-office is paisa vasool.

“Back home they call it the Raghavan Instinct” – A famous one-liner from the movie Vettaiaadu Vilayadu by GV Menon. This is the theme for the movie Taken. I wouldn’t be surprised if this movie is dubbed in tamil and named as Vettaiaadu Vilayadu Season 2. The story is of a retired (VRS) secret service agent who avenges to sneak and destroy his daughter’s kidnappers and retrieve her. Liam Neeson is the spy and he has done an excellent job in this 2 hour thriller. The story is simple and straight forward, but the nail bitting 2 hours experience is the one to be lauded. Wonderful and realistic action, love, sentiment, guns, detectives and you name it, you’ve got it. “Taken” is not only worth a watch, but also don’t miss it kinda movie.(…pssst…the movie is gonna be in screens only by Feb 2009 😉 )

Anniversary with N95 8Gig

Its been exactly one year since I laid hands on the N95 8gig. It was freshly launched then, and I was the among the few first buyers in the city. So what now? Is it time for a change? Let me think out loud.

The mobile has been an exceptional performer. Great camera, wonderful usability, mediocre battery and ruggedness are a few good points to mention. I found 8gb very hard to fill. I have not crossed 5 gb of storage. Thanks to Smartmovie for movie and Nokia Multimedia. Smartmovie converts a full length DivX movie (700mb) to less than 120mb with optimized quality for the N95 screen. Nokia Multimedia organizer coverts a 11-12mb mp3 to 2-3 mb m4a format with lossless conversion techniques. I still don’t think I have listened to all 1200+ tracks stored in it. The Wi-Fi has been very useful and this is one feature I will not compromise in my next mobile. I haven’t used GPS much, mainly due to poor infrastructure over here. GPRS? yes, i use it very often and its satisfactory. I couldn’t comment on the mobile’s 3G features because 3G is not yet launched in India.

Symbian OS has rendered my phone to be very slow. It has been slow with 0GB stored and also 5-6GB stored data. Data doesn’t matter, the phone is inherently slow. The mobile is a bit bulky on dimension and weight. That seriously upsets the aesthetics aspects of this performer. The build quality is very poor. The rubber coating at the back panel starts to wear off within 3-4 months of usage. The slide mechanism scratches the paint of the keypad. It’s very difficult to find face panel for N95 8Gig. But the phone is totally rugged. I have dropped it infinite times but the phone is still in good conditions. Lack of camera lens cover is one serious flaw. I could never find a replacement lens as well. The Nokia care center in Chennai is a total crap. They wanted the phone for 15-20 days plus almost 20% of the MRP just to change the face panel and camera lens. I swear, I will never enter that place again.

This phone is an engineering splendor but an architectural blunder.

So what next? Do I go in and get a new mobile? Or still stay with my favorite N95?

If I choose to stay, then it would be for its sheer power and performance plus the moolah i shed out of my wallet.

If its going, then what next? Definitely not an iPhone or N96. iPhone is not a very flexible phone for power users like me. N96 is both an engineering and architectural blunder. With its weak battery, poor construction, heavy pricing for the same features as N95 8gig, I would not even think of N96. N85 and N79 are my attention grabbers. Both have similar features. They have memory card slots expandable upto 8gb, touch sensitive navigation wheel, FM transmitter and almost all other features of N95 8gb but with a camera lens cover. N85 has OLED screen, which means a richer display but still N79 is a clear choice because it a hassle-free monolithic constructed mobile and gets rid of the slider snags. It weighs lesser(97g) than any Nokian in its class. Its panels are easily replaceable. But the final choice depends on the price factor and user reviews.

Nokia’s touch UI mobile 5800 expressMusic also thrills. It is subsidized in Europe and costs just 270 Euros at launch. But the Indian pricing could be different. Also detailed user review is awaited. If the rumors are right, Nokia is also about to launch Touch UI in their N series as well, and that could mean a long wait.

So I could either have my N95 8gig and wait for N Series with Touch UI, or I could go in and get a N79 and use it for about an year or so and then get a second generation Nokia.

P.S: I am a hardcore Nokian, so I will not choose the highly unstable Sony Ericsson product line or the ever failing Samsung mobiles, atleast until they prove themselves at the user market. But Android??? mmhm..

Presto – the charm-caster

I happened to watch Pixar studio’s Presto accidentally as I was browsing my DVD collection. Presto is a short animation movie from the makers of classic animation movies like Wall E, Cars and Ratatoullie. Its about a magician and his pet rabbit which he pulls out of his hat to entertain the audience. One not-so-fine day, Presto forgets to feed the rabbit Alec and Alec ensures that he suffers for his mistake.

The movie lasts for no more that 3-4 minutes. But very racy paced and intellectually intriguing stuff gave me a satisfaction equal to watching a full length movie. What struck me most was the simplicity of the story, animation and characters and out-of-the-box thinking by the director.
